True power comes from staying balanced and fluid through challenge. My style offers a powerful, integrated practice that combines Power Yoga and Mixed Movement with elements of animal movements, Qigong, martial arts, energy medicine, yoga, breathwork, and meditation.
One of my greatest memories was seeing the long, empty, shiny floors of the Wongan Hills Hospital corridors! I have no doubt, at 8 years old, I gasped in rebellious excitement when, decked out in my hot pink dressing gown, I found myself with nothing to do and an able body. Shame my brother was in getting a broken leg cast, but me.... I spent a good hour flying up and down the hall with cartwheels, handstands and back flips. Could it get any better!
When I was younger I played many sports at representative level. I thrived on the training, the games, developing my skills and the team spirit, but I desperately wanted to be a gymnast. I had the body shape, the strength and a bucket load of desire, but there was one problem- I lived in a country town that had no teachers. Fast track to my 30s and retiring from my devotion to team sport to discover that yoga could fill my childhood gymnastics dreams. I know that's not the idea of yoga, but it's often where it starts. I wanted a strong, moving and powerful practise and I wanted to be on my hands and yoga fit that slowing down bill perfectly.
That's where I started- attending classes on and off from the early 90s as a purely physical practise, but what I found over time was the physical practise created a space for me to expose and develop my intuitive and spiritual sides.
To me the Power of Power Yoga is not necessarily that it's going to be a physically hard class, although it could be because it sure knows how to touch into our shadow side, but it's being challenged by a physical practise yet maintaining equanimity. To stay calm and in flow when all we want to do is yell and resist.
Being a natural born teacher, it made sense to learn more about this craft so I could bring it back and share with others. I have been to many teacher trainings and have learned many different styles of yoga, movement and energy alignment practises.
I have also trained in many methods of physical and spiritual healing which has given me great insight into the human body.
At the beginning my focus was to teach yoga for athletes and while I have done this, I have also spent many an hour with every day humans that want to live a healthier and more aligned life.
I have trained everyone from regular human legends to elite athletes. It has been a privilege to have the opportunity to act as the head sports trainer for the NSW Petersham Rugby Union club as well as teach yoga to a number of professional athletes and teams like:
Each time I participate in a movement workshop with Rommie, I come away knowing so much more about my anatomy, the energetics of my body, and how to move and feel more efficiently. I have a background in anatomy and biomechanics and Rommie's natural ability to see movement patterns, energetic flow, how they present in different people and bodies is amazing. There's a whole lot of 'junk' in the movement and fitness industry, it is so refreshing to learn from someone who has a 'no nonsense approach to health.
There's no wasted time in a workshop with Rommie. Nourishing information and insight comes at you from every angle! She has the skill to take you to you're edge, mentally, physically and spiritually. Her vast experience and knowledge, creates a safe place for personal exploration, and getting what you need. Kind of like eating brussell spoouts! I know it's good for me…. but sometimes it's confronting!
Power Yoga is a dynamic practise that challenges the body to build strength and endurance through a flowing sequence of poses. These classes are as challenging as you want them to be. I say this because while you are usually given alternatives during a class to work at different levels, you have the option to push your edge or faff around and nap. It actually doesn't matter either way because the key is to listen to the voice of your body when it's saying to you, "you can hold that longer or sit this one out".
You may also find power yoga challenging if you have never practised yoga before, you are developing strength and endurance from a gym or other methods, or your mindset is off-line. None of that matters either, but if it means anything to you, it's something you can ponder while sipping your magnesium before bed.
Listen Movers, life is serious enough without making it any harder or setting yourself up for an unwanted injury. Do it or don't to whatever degree you feel like on the day, it's as simple as that.
Mixed Movement is fun, energising, dynamic, challenging and broken down into understandable bites. It is a blend of yoga, animal movements, martial arts, medical Qigong and energy medicine. It has all the challenges of Power Yoga but it is not a pure yoga class.
Sounds a lot, but as I said before, don't take life so seriously and have fun with it.
Music, a good amount of self compassion and laughter is an essential default in all of my classes.
